ACT 36: Inter-Class Badminton Competition 2009
Today, I took part in the Inter-Class Competition which I was looking forward to since Wednesday. I sign up for the sec 3 males singles and was informed by Ms Doreen Tan that my first opponent was Ricky Tan Hai Qing from class 3P2. I was told by my classmate, Kasturi, that Ricky was good in sports. Thus I was so nervous as it was a knockout match and that means that if you lose, you're out of the game. Before the match started, we were allowed to stroke (sort of warm-up in which you just hit the ball to him and he hits it back to you) with each other, so I let him win all the strokes so as to let him think that I am weak and hopefully he will underestimate me ( I did this as I thought that he was good in badminton). As the real match starts, I was chosen to serve the the shuttlecock first. So I served it all the way to the back of the court and I thought he would return it, but unfortunately he was not able to return it. After seeing this, I was so glad that what Kasturi said about Ricky being a good badminton was wrong. So the game continued and it was an easy game for me. The match ended with 21:7 within 10 minutes. I let him get 2 points while the rest were all the mistakes that I made. But at one point, he was actually quite smart as he hit the ball to a place that was hard for me to reach and I was totally stunt by that, but I managed to hit it back and then he continued to hit to another spot where I almost could not reach. As he did not expect me to reach it, I earned the point after hitting it back the second time.
My next opponent was Winston from class 3V6. I did not expect to see him in the semi-finals. So I played with him. I was actually leading in the first half of the match, but in the second half of the match he caught up with me and overtook me. The match ended with 21: 16 with Winston as the winner. I guess the weak point that I had was that I lack of stamina to sustain the long battle. We were hitting our hardest ( i guess) and we were making each other running around in the court and that costs me a lot of stamina. Despite the fact that I lost to Winston, I am glad that we were able to play seriously with each other, it felt almost like we have never played seriously with each other before.
After my match with Winston, Winston's next opponent was Chin Tat. So he played with him and Winston won with 21: 16. Winston said that he made a lot of mistake in that game and I told him that it was probably due to his stamina not fully recovered. So Winston got first in the Sec 3 males Singles.
After this, I expected there to be another match so as to determine the second and third position between Chin Tat and I. But there was no more match left. I think that it was unfair as Chin Tat only need to play with one player to get into the finals. This makes it look like I am inferior to Chin Tat but the fact was we did not even get to play to determine who is better. But, perhaps this is what they call unlucky.
Next was the Mixed doubles, Jin Kai and Sophia were representing 3V6 and their first opponents were from 3S5. So I was standing outside the court looking for the weakness of their opponent and I told them some. But in the end they lose with 21: 16. This was actually more than expected for me. So, I suppose they will get the third position.
After Jin Kai's match we were discussing about the match and suddenly Saifuddin asked me to substitute him for the mixed doubles. Their opponent were 3S5 and Chin Tat substituted for Benjamin. So I agreed and we played the match. For the first half of the match, it was easy using the doubles trick serve that I created, I felt sorry for Chin Tat's partner as I accidentally smashed at her hands twice. In the second half of the match, I saw that Chin Tat's eyes and face were different and looks as though he was really pissed off. But in the end we won with 21: 15. So in the end our class got 1st position for the Sec 3 Females Singles and Mixed Doubles and 3rd position for Males Singles.
After the doubles match, Chin Tat came to me and said that actually I should not use the doubles serving and serve it to the back, I nodded my head. Jin Kai heard the conversation and asked me if what I did not illegal and I told him that it was totally fine as just that doubles serving was used to serve to the front and not the back. But that was what normal person would expect (including Chin Tat). But playing badminton requires technique and deception, more importantly doing what others would expect.
I felt that I still have some unsettles business with Chin Tat. But I guess will not do anything about it.
